Ask the Readers: DSLR Resources

I have an awesome hubby! :)

He’s awesome most days anyway, but to celebrate our move, he gifted me a brand new camera! A Canon EOS Rebel T3 12.2 MP CMOS Digital SLR with 18-55mm IS II Lens and EOS HD Movie Mode to be exact – and a fancy long range lens!!!

So, I went from this

whew! That’s a big upgrade!!! Now I need your help! This camera takes some pretty awesome photos even on full Auto, but I want to learn all of the tricks I can.

What are your favorite resources for learning about DSLR photography and photography in general? I have a Photography Pinterest Board waiting to be filled!!! :) If I get any awesome tips, I’ll share them in a separate post later! Thanks in advance!!

You do have an awesome hubby!! That is so cool! I have a Rebel too, and I love it!! My hubby is a photographer, so I have instant help :) I would suggest checking out this post — http://www.edibleperspective.com/photography/ — she has some great tips! I pretty much use manual mode for everything now, but it took me a while and a lot of trial and error to get comfortable with it, And most important – have fun!

That’s the big thing. experiment. Big things to look out for: shutter speed (fast shutter =no blur but dark at low light and vice versa), aperture (field of focus-just up close or away or both), and white balance (does white look white, i.e. color of lighting). Play around w/ it. Now, if you start shooting B/W, then white balance is irrelevant. Oh, also play around w/ continuous drive. you hold down your shutter button and the camera is a machine gun shooting 5+ fps. However, you can’t really do this w/ the flash. speaking of flashes, as the kids get older, and if you have them start playing sports, especially inside ones (Bball, vball, etc.) you’ll need to consider upgrading to an external additional flash. From experience the built in flashes just lack the oomph you need. Again though, just play w/ it a lot. that’s the best teacher.

  3. How sweet! I’m excited for you!! You can see all my photography links on my pinterest board here: http://pinterest.com/themodestmom/photography/ Also, the biggest thing I’ve found that has been helpful is to turn off the flash, unless absolutely necessary.

  5. I sure wish I could remember the sites I used, because I learned everything I know about manual photography online. Yay for a new camera!! Love it!

  6. I have no knowledge to share, but a funny-to-me story…
I’ve wanted a DSLR camera for years, and finally bought one on Black Friday of this past year. And I’ve yet to learn how to use it. And I’ve taken pictures with it only twice. I’ve found myself so wrapped up in family life and other activities that my dreamed-of camera has been neglected!
I hope that you have more success using your camera than I have had with mine! ;)

  7. Anjanette,
Don’t know if you read or know of the blog “The Pioneer Woman” Ree Drummond in Oklahoma. She taught herself how to use a DSLR and has a great resource with in her blog @ http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/, there should be dozens of posts to read through over time.
