Coconut Flour Review & Giveaway

I was introduced to Tropical Traditions coconut products a few years ago when I started doing research on fat in my diet. I started using coconut oil as my primary cooking oil, and eventually applied to sample and giveaway some coconut oil from Tropical Traditions.

I was given the opportunity to try another Tropical Traditions product after that, and I decided to try coconut flour. I know a lot of people who can’t or choose not to eat grains, so I thought I’d try it for their sakes.

I had no idea that we were going to go through our own adventures with digestive issues and going grain free for a while. It is such a blessing that I tried it when I did, as it’s given me another staple product to use in place of wheat products.

I should say right out that coconut “flour” (really finely ground dried coconut) is *not* like wheat flour. You cannot substitute it 1:1, or expect coconut flour baked goods to taste like wheat flour baked goods. That being said, there are LOTS of yummy recipes that use coconut flour and if you are up to trying something new, you’ll find one that you like!

From the Tropical Traditions website:

Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour… is certified organic, unsweetened, and has not been treated with sulfites. Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour is high in dietary fiber and protein, and is gluten-free. It has more fiber than gluten-based grains.

Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour can be added to standard wheat-based recipes to add extra fiber, by substituting 10-30% of the grain-based flour with our coconut flour. Some recipes, such as muffins and quick breads, can be accomplished with 100% Tropical Traditions organic coconut flour and therefore be 100% gluten-free!

Since organic coconut flour contains natural sugar from the coconut meat, baked goods need less sugar added. The organic coconut flour has a mildly sweet coconut taste!

Later this week, I’ll share two of my own coconut flour recipes (!!!) – Coconut Cashew Shortbread Cookies, and High Fiber High Protein (coconut flour) Pizza! For now, check out some of my favorites from around the web:

Coconut Flour Blueberry Muffins
Coconut Flour Bread
Fluffy Coconut Flour Pancakes
Chocolate Chip Coconut Flour Banana Bread

There’s also a treasure-trove of unique recipes all in one place at Tropical Tradition’s Free Coconut Recipes site.

  20. Please enter me! I would love to win some of this stuff for my Dad! He has had to go Vegan and Gluten-free since he had his heart attack in June. By following his diet he has lost over forty pounds! I am so proud of him! But I do know it is hard for him to stick to it. (He hasn’t cheated once though!) I want to try as many different things for him as I can. I plan on making rice milk tommorow. :)

  22. Oh and I forgot to mention earlier, I’ve never used any coconut flour in cooking, but we do use coconut oil. Right now we occasionally buy the gluten-free box mixes but we usually just cook a lot of vegetables, eggs, and oat groats for Dad. His diet is pretty boring right now. I would love to change things up for him some!

  23. Wow, I didn’t even know this product existed! I definitely must try it.
We ate TONS of coconut when we lived in Maldives and we loved it. But unsweetened coconut products are so hard to find in the US! Thanks, AJ, for the info!
